Bob Plotkin
Bob Plotkin's life in photography began the way the best ones do — in a basement darkroom in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., where his father handed him a camera and a set of chemistry trays in the 1970s. He shot for his school yearbook and literary magazine before engineering and career pulled his focus elsewhere, though the camera never left his side. When IBM handed him a 1-megapixel Kodak DC210 in the mid-90s to shoot materials for the early internet, something clicked: digital photography married perfectly with his engineering and computer science background, and he threw himself into Photoshop while it was still finding its footing. He went on to produce some of the first interactive, photo-based banner ads on sites like Yahoo!, blending technology and image-making in ways few photographers were even imagining at the time. Today, Bob shoots mirrorless and medium format, and his work has been recognized in PSA international competitions, accepted into juried shows, and published in outlets including the New York Times. When he's not behind a camera, he can be found on the golf course or playing violin in a local orchestra. He has traveled with X-Peditions to both Cuba and Hanoi — bringing the same curious, technically assured eye to the streets of the Old Quarter that he once brought to a basement darkroom in the suburbs of New York.
