About this site
Photography as a way of seeing. Travel as a way of understanding.
Since 2018, X-Peditions has led small groups of photographers to some of the world's most visually rich destinations — beginning with Cuba in 2018 and 2019, and since then, deep into the streets, markets, and villages of Hanoi — not as tourists, but as visual storytellers learning to see a place from the inside.
The workshops were founded by two old college friends: David Hobby, photojournalist, photography educator and author, and Joe Newman, photographer, writer and photo festival organizer. They built X-Peditions on the conviction that meaningful images grow from meaningful encounters. David has since retired from teaching but the spirit he brought to every workshop — a deep commitment to connection, craft, and cultural respect — remains at the heart of everything we do.
The photographs in these galleries were made by the people who traveled with us. This site exists to celebrate what they created, and the cities, villages, and cultures that made it possible.
